Schengen enlargement
The Schengen territory, as of 21 December 2007, been enlarged to include Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Malta and the Czech Republic.
The Schengen territory has since 25 March 2001 consisted of 15 countries:
Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway.
In conjunction with the enlargement of the number of Schengen members now comprosing 24 countries, the Council of European Union in Brussels has informed its members about some changes concerning the obligation of diplomitic and consular missions of member states to consult with the authorities of certain countries before issuing a Schengen visa.
Due to the above, all visa applications from Bangladesh nationals as of 21 December 2007 will have to be consulted before the visa can be issued. As a result the waiting period for a visa will be a minimum of 14 calendar days.
REQUIREMENTS FOR SHORT STAY SCHENGEN VISA DHAKA
General requirements for Schengen Visa
- Applicant should apply in person. Travel agents or other individuals are not allowed to represent the applicant.
- One application form PER APPLICANT should be perfected with full names & two recent passport size coloured photographs (full face, light background, size: 35 by 45 mm.).
- Children on parent’s passport must fill out separate application form. A letter from school confirming permitted leave of the children should be provided.
- Valid passport (and previous passports, if any). Current passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended stay. A copy of the bio page and amendment page should be annexed to the application form.
- Applicant should be in possession of confirmed travel itinerary from an approved travel agent and a travel insurance valid for the length of stay and for all Schengen states covering medical repatriation, emergency medical and hospital care. A minimum cover of 30.000 EUROS is mandatory (DK + NL: travel insurance to be provided after decision to issue visa).
- Children below 18 years travelling alone or with guardian should have a letter giving consent to travel from the parents or appointment of guardianship certified by District Court, with copy of parent’s ID and birth certificate of the child with English translation.
- Hotel reservation
Applicant should fill the application and provide all documents required as mentioned hereunder, according to the type of visa. Copies of original documents should be provided by the applicants.
Additional requirements in case of Business Visa:
- Proof of business contact/seminar/workshop (invitation letter) in Schengen State indicating purpose and duration of visit.
- An original letter with a “guarantee for visit”, if principals/company in Schengen is covering travel expenses and/or accommodation
- Proof of business registration, trade license e.g. both with English translation (original + copy)
- Letter from employer indicating date of appointment, profession, salary particulars and contract of employment
- Letter from company/employer in Bangladesh indicating purpose and duration of visit
- Company’s and personal bank statements for last six months (original + copies)
In case of Tourist/Family/Visit and Transit Visa
- If inviting party is financing your stay in Schengen: original + copy of Certificate of accommodation (S: Appendix E, NL: “garantverklaring”; Dld: “Verpflichtungs-erklärung”; F: “Attestation d’acceuil”; E: Compromiso de Invitación”; I: “Fidejussione Bancaria”) with copy of sponsor’s passport/ID card & residence permit (if applicable), proof of employment with salary slips for the last three (03) months.
OR
- If inviting party is not financing your stay: legalised letter of invitation (NB French embassy requires “Attestation d’acceuil”)
OR
- Letter from employer stating date of commencement of employment and confirming period of approved paid/unpaid leave.
- Personal bank statements for the last six months (original + copies) .(S:Minimum of 40 Euro per diem)
- For students: letter from school/university confirming permitted leave
- In some cases proof of (family)relation might be requested.
In case of Airport Transit Visa
- The applicant should be in possession of the required visa for the final destination
- Confirmed airline ticket

The application handling fee charged at the time of submitting your visa application, will not be refunded under any circumstances.

SHORT-STAY VISA FOR SCHENGEN TERRITORY
A Schengen visa enables a foreigner to travel to the Schengen area, which include the following countries: France, Portugal, Spain, Germany, Austria, Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, Finland and Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Malta and the Czech Republic.
With a Schengen visa you can travel between these countries as long as the Schengen visa is valid, under the following conditions:
- You have to apply for your Schengen visa at the Embassy of your MAIN destination. If the main destination cannot be determined, responsibility for issuance of the visa lies with the Schengen state of first entry.
- A visa gives the opportunity to enter the Schengen area and is not a legal right.
- The purpose of a proposed visit cannot be altered once the visa has been issued.
- It is recommended you apply in the period that lies between three (3) weeks and three (3) months prior to entry to the Schengen area.

The Embassy of France is also the only competent authority for any applicant who intends to visit the French overseas territory, Monaco and Andorra, even if the main destination of his/her travel may be elsewhere, as well as for the following African countries : Burkina Faso, Central-Africa, Djibouti, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Mauritania, Senegal, Togo.
