The Norwegian Government allocated in August NOK 15 million (USD 2,5 million) as humanitarian assistance to the flood victims in Bangladesh and Nepal. These funds will be channeled through various UN organisations, International NGOs and Norwegian NGOs.
28/08/2007 :: There has been a great need for emergency relief to several countries in South Asia after this year's flood in the region. On 19 July the Norwegian Government informed that it would provide NOK 14.5 million to aid flood victims in Pakistan. In August an additional NOK 15 million were granted in humanitarian assistance to the flood victims in Bangladesh and Nepal.
Altogether approximately 40 million people have been affected by the flood in South Asia this year. In Bangladesh approximately 10 million have been affected. Various UN organisations as well as international and Norwegian NGOs have received the relief funds from the Norwegian Government to support their work for the flood victims. The Norwegian Minister of International Development Erik Solheim says: "Contributing to rescue lives and secure health are now the most important tasks, and the Norwegian support will therefore be used to cover immediate needs such as housing, safe drinking water, food and medicines".
