Dr Shirin Chaudhury, Speaker of the House, and Ms Nazma Akter, General Secretary and Founder of Bangladesh Independent Garment Worker’s Union Federation, were particularly honored at the networking afternoon tea organized by Ambassador Ragne Birte Lund at the Embassy Residence in Dhaka on 27 September. More than fifty participants took part in this informal gathering which also served as an occasion for Ambassador Lund to bid farewell to the women leaders in so many fields in Bangladesh, to women ambassador colleagues as well as women leaders of the UN System in Dhaka.

The Norwegian telecom operator Telenor, which is the majority owner of Bangladesh’s largest mobile phone company Gramenphone, finally launched the third-generation (3G) network on September 30th. The 3G service will provide faster internet for smartphone users, enabling the users to do video calls or even watch mobile TV.

More than 400 Bangladeshi students submitted their ideas to the Telenor Youth Summit Idea Contest on how to use mobile telephony for social change. Two sisters, Sami Tahsin and Safa Tasneem, won the final at GP House September 28th. They will represent Bangladesh at the Telenor Youth Summit in Oslo in December as well as attend events on the occasion of the Nobel Peace Prize 2013.

The Embassy sponsored a study titled “Water scarcity in Bangladesh and South Asia: Examining dynamics of conflict and cooperation” conducted by the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), published March 22. 2013. Dr. Åshild Kolås from PRIO lead the study team in collaboration with colleagues from PRIO and researchers from Bangladesh, India and Nepal.
