A memorandum of understanding between the Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS) in Dhaka and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR) in Bergen, Norway was signed at the residence of the Norwegian Ambassador in Bangladesh on October 28th. Both institutions are strong players towards the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Research (IPCC). They are doing complementary research, as the BCCR is primarily doing research on understanding and modelling of the climate system, while the BCAS is well-known for its work on sustainable development at local, national, regional, and global levels. The collaboration will be on capacity building for studying, mitigation, and adaptation to climate change and linkage to natural disaster risk reduction with focus on Bangladesh. Four principal areas of collaboration will be
• Sea level changes and impacts for Bangladesh
• South Asia and Southeast Asia summer monsoon changes and impacts on Bangladesh
• Mass balance changes of Himalayan and Tibetan glaciers and its effects on Bangladesh
• Research training and exchange of scientific staff
The collaboration aims to involve other institutions both from Bangladesh and Norway.
