On January 12th, Norwegian Ambassador Ragne Birte Lund and Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, met for an hour long meeting on several topics relating to Norwegian/Bangladeshi relations.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina opened the meeting by promising the Ambassador full cooperation on the part of her Government and a continued strong dialog between the two countries.
In addition to government to government dialogue, Ambassador Lund brought up the cooperation between an increasing number of Norwegian and Bangladeshi institutions. The longstanding research cooperation between Christian Michelsens Institute and Center for Policy Dialogue was one of the examples mentioned.
- Through these types of cooperation Norway can share knowledge and contribute to competence building in a few selected areas in Bangladesh that are central to the ambitious goals the Government has set, said Ambassador Lund.
Telecom and maritime issues
The Ambassador also highlighted the contribution made by the Norwegian company Telenor and Grameenphone to the development of Bangladesh as the largest taxpayer to the Government, and the role they can play in the digitalization of Bangladesh.
The Prime Minister and the Ambassador also exchanged views regarding the ship building and ship breaking industry, and the need to comply with international standards for safe and environmentally sound ship breaking.
- Together with UN’s International Maritime Organization, Norway is ready to support Bangladesh in this endeavor, said Ambassador Lund.
