Norwegian support to institutional cooperation on air quality management

On the 2nd of August the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU) signed an agreement with the Department of Environment (DoE), a directorate under the Ministry of Environment and Forest, concerning air pollution management in Bangladesh. The agreement is in line with the new guidelines for development cooperation between Norway and Bangladesh and is supported by Norad, who will contribute with 8 million Norwegian Kroner over a period of three years.

The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Dhaka has signed a Cost-Sharing Agreement with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Bangladesh on Sunday 11 July 2010 for supporting the Comprehensive Disaster Management Programme (CDMP) of the Government of Bangladesh (GoB). Under the Agreement UNDP Bangladesh will receive 100 million Norwegian Kroner (USD 16 million) over a five years period of 2010-2014.

Norway and Indonesia agreed today to enter into a partnership to support Indonesia's efforts to reduce emissions from deforestation and degradation of forests and peat lands. Indonesia will take immediate and decisive action to reduce its forest and peat related greenhouse gas emissions. Norway will support those efforts with one billion USD over the next few years.

At 11am on Monday the 16th November, Grameenphone was formally listed on the Bangladeshi stock exchange. With the listing, the number of shareholders in the company has increased from just two to almost 320 000. This is the largest stock exchange quotation in the history of Dhaka Stock Exchange. Professor Muhammad Yunus and Mosammat Taslima Begum on behalf of Grameen Bank received the Nobel Peace prize on 10 December 2006 in Oslo City Hall in the presence of His Royal Highness King Harald V and Queen Sonja. Among many events marking the achievements of Professor Yunus and the Grameen Bank, the Nobel Peace Center organised an exhibition in Oslo portraying the evolution and growth of Grameen Bank and micro credit as a powerful means for poverty eradication, and the role of Professor Yunus in the process since the foundation of Grameen Bank in 1976. The exhibition “A Fistful of Dollars” was inaugurated at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo by Professor Yunus during the receipt of the award and remained open for one year (until replaced with the new one produced in connection with Nobel Peace Prize 2007) for the visitors. The exhibition has now been reproduced in Dhaka by Drik Picture Library under the title ‘Jobra to Oslo’ in collaboration with the Grameen Bank and the Royal Norwegian Embassy, Dhaka

Cultural co-operation

Norway has well established cultural relations with Bangladesh, both when it comes to cultural exchange and support to institution building.
