International conference in Stavanger, Norway in 2008

For the first time a United Nations sponsored international conference will be held in the Stavanger area. This will be in 2008, during the same year as Stavanger achieves its status as a European Capital of Culture. An environmental conference attended by a thousand children from a hundred countries will leave a lasting impression on the region.

Norwegian Finn E. Kydland is awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics

The Royal Swedish Academy of Science announced on 11 October that Finn E. Kydland of Norway and Edward C. Prescott of the USA have been awarded the Nobel Prize in economics for 2004.

The Nobel Peace Prize Award Ceremony in Oslo on 10 December

Each year in December the Nobel Peace Prize is presented by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. The Nobel Peace Prize Laureate 2004, Wangari Maathai, will receive the award at Oslo City Hall on 10 December. The Nobel Days in Oslo end with the Nobel Peace Prize Concert, where a number of world-famous artists will perform.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2004 to Wangari Maathai for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace. The price will be awarded on December 10th in Oslo.

For the fourth year in a row, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has ranked Norway as having the highest standard of living in the world. The ranking is based largely on average levels of education and income, combined with expected length of lifetime.
