Norwegian development co-operation with Bangladesh started in 1973, and for many years Bangladesh was a main partner country. Over the years Bangladesh has been among the largest recipients of Norwegian development assistance with a total of around 6 billion NOK. Bangladesh has had relatively good economic and social development over many years and has gradually become less dependent on foreign assistance.

Norwegian support to institutional cooperation on air quality management

On the 2nd of August the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU) signed an agreement with the Department of Environment (DoE), a directorate under the Ministry of Environment and Forest, concerning air pollution management in Bangladesh. The agreement is in line with the new guidelines for development cooperation between Norway and Bangladesh and is supported by Norad, who will contribute with 8 million Norwegian Kroner over a period of three years.

On Monday 28 June 2010, Ms. Ingebjørg Støfring, Ambassador of Norway to Bangladesh, and Ms. Ayesha Khanam, President of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) signed a new contract of cooperation. Under this contract, Norway will provide financial grant not exceeding 35 million Norwegian Kroner to BMP over five year period from 2010 to 2014 for supporting the BMP’s Project entitled “Promotion and Protection of Women’s Human Rights in Bangladesh”.

UDs ordning med å ha praktikanter ved ambassadene har blitt svært populær, og mange studenter og nyutdannede benytter muligheten til å få arbeidserfaring fra en utenriksstasjon. Praktikantene jobber 6 måneder ved en ambassade, og blir lønnet i form av et stipend fra UD. Praktikantoppholdene i Dhaka utlyses på regjeringen.no og på ambassadens hjemmesider.
